According to my Facebook poll, this was hands down the one most of y’all struggle with. I honestly think it’s a tie between this and patience for me!
However, after taking a day at a time to talk about each fruit and truly meditate on them, I will be the first to admit that I need work in all of these areas.
Is there anybody else out there that seems to lose their self-control due to their lack of patience? (Please tell me I’m not the only one!).
What does the Bible say about this?
In James 3:5-6a it says, “Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is on fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.”
Recently, Gatlinburg and surrounding areas were devastated by wildfires. There is so much loss and it will take time for them to heal and rebuild.
Isn’t it the same way when we hear something hurtful has been said about us? The hurt and the sting of their words feels just like a wildfire.
I’ll be the first to admit that I have been the one to say hurtful things too-all due to my lack of self-control. That one word that I thought would justify my actions or feelings? It only ended up making things worse when I spoke them from my selfish heart.
Does any of this sound familiar?
So what can we do?
Colossians 3:15-17 has some great advice. Check this out!
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
If we spend our time looking for opportunities to be a light and turn around and give God the glory, we grow to be more like Him and all of the fruits we have talked about will be evident in our lives.
A word of caution- People will notice. So be quick to tell them the reason why you are different! 🙂
I pray that these past 9 days have helped you in your Christian walk. God bless!
